Tax filing season is in full swing as we near the April 15 deadline. For the past 20 years, United Way has partnered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to support MyFreeTaxes.com and offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. At a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet, saving hundreds of dollars on tax prep can make an enormous difference.
This year, United Way Worldwide is partnering with the U.S. Department of the Treasury to promote Direct File, the new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) pilot program available to eligible filers in 12 states to file their federal taxes for free directly with the IRS. The 12 states participating are those which either do not have a state income tax or have a state-supported tool to file state income taxes: Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Nationwide, taxpayers making less than $79,000 can also file for free through MyFreeTaxes.com.
Please join us in promoting IRS Direct File in your community so that more individuals and families can take advantage of this free service. You can:
· Promote/link to the IRS Direct File website within your community – across business/private sector partners, nonprofit partners, agencies, and volunteers
· Share information with your friends and colleagues about the free, easy, safe, and secure IRS Direct File pilot
· Promote free tax filing options (VITA, MyFreeTaxes, and Direct File) within your workplace
